real turning point.

Closing the First House Roberts Quest

This session saw the completion of the House Roberts questline.

It’s satisfying reaching the end of a longer thread like this, especially in a game that encourages you to take your time. It didn’t feel rushed — just a natural progression from everything that came before.

First Boss: Excavatron

The highlight of the session was taking down my first major boss:

Excavatron.

This fight immediately stood out.

Unlike earlier encounters, this boss hits hard. It demanded a bit more attention and preparation or at least, it should have.

Fortunately, I found an approach that made all the difference:

The Beehive Club.

Using it made the fight much quicker and far more manageable. It turned what could have been a drawn-out battle into something controlled and satisfying.

Still, it was a clear step up in challenge a reminder that the game has more to offer beyond its slower early pacing.

Liberating the Quarry (Karin)

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

After the boss, I moved on to liberating the quarry.

This was less planned.

I went in with limited food and preparation, which added a bit of tension to the encounter. claimed my first bounty.

Tracking down and catching Jeffery the pickpocketer felt like a natural extension of the world not just another task, but something that added to the sense of living within it.

It wasn’t overly complex or difficult, but it didn’t need to be. It was satisfying in a quieter way. I went to the area, and there he was, it was easy enough to chase him down too.

Continuing the Journey

After that, I moved back into the main quest.

Progression here feels steady rather than rushed, and this session brought with it something new:

new abilities unlocked.

Moments like this are always rewarding not just because they make you stronger, but because they open up new ways to interact with the world.

This also led me to my first duel in the town. Challenged by a knight who had heard what the Greymane’s were all about. This only ended in one outcome of course.

Alongside this I continued the House Roberts questline- this has now left me at the final part of the questline and I am now on my way to fight Excavatron.

Finding a Rhythm

What’s starting to become clear is the rhythm I want for this playthrough.

Not rushing through everything at once.

Instead:

progress the main story

step away for side content

explore when it feels right

This session leaned more towards progression, but it still felt balanced.

Looking Ahead

For now, I’m planning to continue with the main quest, after completing the House Roberts side quest.

There’s a sense that the game is still opening up, and I want to follow that path a little further before branching out again.

But the next step after that feels clear:

More bounties.

More exploration.

More time spent simply seeing what the world has to offer.

Session Reflection

Even in a short session, Crimson Desert continues to deliver small, meaningful moments.

A bounty completed.

New abilities unlocked.

A sense of steady progression.

It’s not about how much gets done.

It’s about how it feels while you’re doing it.

Session Summary

Game: Crimson Desert

Session Length: ~15–30 minutes

Highlights: First bounty completed (Jeffery the pickpocketer), new abilities unlocked

Focus: Main quest progression

Mood: Focused and satisfied

Next Objective: Continue main quest, then return to side missions and exploration

Best JRPGs for Beginners (Start Your First Adventure the Right Way)

Getting into JRPGs can feel overwhelming.

Mana Mode

Getting into JRPGs can feel overwhelming.

Long playtimes, complex systems, and decades of history can make it hard to know where to start. But the truth is, many JRPGs are incredibly welcoming you just need the right entry point.

If you’re new to the genre, these games are perfect for starting your journey.

What Makes a JRPG Beginner-Friendly?

Before diving into the list, here’s what makes a good starting point:

simple, easy-to-understand combat

clear progression systems

engaging but not overwhelming stories

a steady pace that allows you to learn

The games below all balance depth with accessibility.

1. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

If there’s one JRPG designed for beginners, it’s Dragon Quest XI.

It uses classic turn-based combat that is easy to understand, while still offering enough depth to stay engaging. The world is colourful, the story is straightforward, and the pacing is gentle.

It teaches you how JRPGs work without ever overwhelming you.

2. Final Fantasy X

Final Fantasy X is one of the most accessible entries in the series.

Its turn-based combat system allows you to take your time, and the story is linear enough that you always know where to go next.

It’s a perfect balance between classic design and modern convenience.

3. Persona 5 Royal

While slightly more complex, Persona 5 Royal introduces systems gradually.

The mix of daily life and dungeon exploration creates a natural rhythm, and the game does an excellent job of guiding new players.

4. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

With its Studio Ghibli-inspired visuals and simple mechanics, this is one of the most charming entry points into the genre.

It feels like playing through a storybook, making it ideal for beginners.

5. Pokémon Red and Blue

Few games are as beginner-friendly as Pokémon.

The mechanics are simple, the goals are clear, and the sense of progression is constant. It’s often the first JRPG many players ever experience. Some of my favourite games to just relax and play. They are always enjoyable and this is the starting point! However if this feels too outdated you can jump in by starting at Pokemon Ruby, Saphire or Emerald, that is also a good starting point.

6. Chrono Trigger

A classic that still holds up.

Chrono Trigger is short for a JRPG, easy to follow, and avoids unnecessary complexity. It’s a great way to experience the genre without committing to a massive time investment.

7. Octopath Traveler

This game allows you to choose your starting character and progress at your own pace.

While it has depth, its structure makes it easy to pick up and play in short sessions.

8. Tales of Arise

I have to admit this was my first game in the Tales of series, and it had me hooked. The characters, the story, the gameplay. Perfect to jump into if this is your first JRPG.

Why JRPGs Are Worth Trying

JRPGs offer something many other genres don’t:

slower, more thoughtful gameplay

rich worlds to explore

long, memorable stories

They’re not about rushing.

They’re about the journey.

A Simple Tip for Beginners

If you’re just starting out:

Play one game at a time

JRPGs are designed to be experienced slowly. Trying to juggle multiple games at once can make them feel overwhelming.

Final Thoughts

Starting your first JRPG can feel like stepping into a new world… because it is.

The key is to choose a game that welcomes you in rather than overwhelms you.

Once you find that first experience, it often leads to many more.

Crimson Desert Quest Log 4: Returning to Hernand

Another short return to Crimson Desert but one that Hernand

This session brought me back to Hernand, and with it, the start of Chapter 2.

There’s something grounding about returning to a familiar place in a game like this. After the early exploration and first discoveries, coming back with a bit more understanding of the world makes everything feel slightly different.

More intentional.

A Rewarding Detour

Rather than pushing forward straight away, I decided to revisit Lioncrest Manor.

Taking the time to go back and explore properly paid off.

I came away with:

a Gold Bar

a Hwando which is a powerful two-handed sword

a Rhonid Large Shield

Moments like this reinforce the kind of experience I want from this playthrough.

Not rushing from objective to objective, but taking the time to explore, revisit, and uncover things I might have missed.

Small Sessions, Steady Progress

Even though this was another short session, it still felt productive.

There’s a rhythm starting to form:

explore

revisit

discover

improve

And that rhythm feels far more enjoyable than trying to push through large sections quickly.

Looking Ahead

With Chapter 2 now underway, I’m hoping to carve out some longer sessions soon. Funnily enough how I started chapter 2 was coming out of a jail cell, this was after getting caught stealing the gold bar from Lioncrest Manor.

There’s a growing sense that the world is opening up further, and I’d like to spend more time within it especially exploring new areas and beginning to take on bounties.

That feels like the next natural step.

Session Reflection

This session was a reminder that progress doesn’t always come from moving forward.

Sometimes it comes from going back. Revisiting places. Taking your time. Letting the world reveal more when you’re ready and so far, Crimson Desert continues to reward that approach.

Session Summary

Game: Crimson Desert

Session Length: ~30 minutes

Progress: Returned to Hernand, started Chapter 2

Highlights: Looted Lioncrest Manor (Gold Bar, Hwando, Rhonid Large Shield)

Mood: Steady and focused

Next Objective: Longer session, begin bounty hunting

Quest Log 3: A Town Worth Slowing Down so far.

Rediscovering the Joy of Towns, I spent most of this session simply exploring the town and it made me realise something. It’s been a long time since I’ve genuinely wanted to explore a town in a game like this. Not because of objectives or rewards but because the environment itself makes you curious.

The medieval setting has been crafted incredibly well. From the layout of the streets to the scale of the castle overlooking everything, it all feels grounded and believable. There’s a weight to it. A sense that this is a place that exists beyond just the player and that makes wandering through it feel meaningful.

A Small Milestone

During this session, I also completed my first abyss puzzle.

It felt like a natural part of the world rather than a forced mechanic, and finishing it came with a reward that immediately changes how I move through the game:

I can now fly.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

It’s a simple sentence, but it opens up so many possibilities.

Exploration already felt rewarding on foot now there’s an entirely new perspective to experience the world from.

Short Sessions, Lasting Impact

Even though I’ve only been playing in short bursts, each session feels like it adds something. A new detail, mechanic and appreciation for the world. There’s no pressure to do more than that, which is what my style and this blog is all about.

Session Reflection

What stood out most today wasn’t progression it was atmosphere.

The feeling of being in the town. The quiet moments of exploration. The sense that this world is worth taking time with.

It’s rare for a game to make you slow down naturally rather than forcing you to and so far, Crimson Desert is doing exactly that.

Session Summary

Game: Crimson Desert

Session Length: ~30 minutes

Highlights: Town exploration, first abyss puzzle completed, unlocked flight

Mood: Immersed and relaxed

Next Objective: Take to the skies and explore the world from a new perspective

Quest Log 2: Small kind of game where progress doesn’t always come from major story moments. Sometimes it’s found in the smaller interactions, the quieter discoveries, and the feeling of simply being present in the world.

A Different Kind of Progress I spent most of this session picking up a few small quests and continuing to explore. Nothing rushed. Nothing forced. Just moving through the world naturally and letting things unfold.

There’s a sense that this game doesn’t need to be pushed forward it rewards you more for taking your time and engaging with what’s around you.

Unexpected Moments

One of the more memorable parts of this session was something simple:

Arm wrestling.

It’s a small detail, but moments like that make the world feel more alive. They break up the usual structure of quests and combat and remind you that there’s more to the game than just progression.

It’s these unexpected interactions that give the world character.

Continuing to Explore

Most of the session was spent wandering. Looking around. Taking in the environment. Seeing what I could find without any real objective in mind and that’s exactly how I want to play this. Not chasing markers. To rush. To discover everything first. To keep up with everyone else playing it.

But I don’t want that experience.

I don’t want to follow guides, copy routes, or watch others uncover the world before I do. Because at that point, it stops feeling like my adventure. It starts to feel like I’m just retracing someone else’s steps.

So with Crimson Desert, I’m approaching it differently.

Slowly.

Intentionally.

And entirely on my own terms.

First Impressions

The opening has been slower than I expected. But not in a negative way.

There’s a sense that the game is building something laying the foundation for a much larger journey. The world feels expansive, even in these early moments, and it’s clear that there’s a lot waiting to be uncovered.

It hasn’t revealed everything yet and that’s exactly what makes it interesting.

The Joy of Not Knowing

One of the most exciting parts of starting a new game like this is simply not knowing what lies ahead. No optimised paths. No “best builds.” No rush to the end. Just exploration.

That’s what I want this playthrough to be about wandering, discovering, and figuring things out naturally.

Letting the world unfold at its own pace.

Session Reflection

Even in these early stages, Crimson Desert already feels like a different kind of experience.

Not just something to complete, but something to live in. It may not be a traditional fit for ManaMode, but the way I approach it still is.

Slow. Curious. Intentional.

And if the opening is anything to go by, this journey is going to be worth taking my time with.

Session Summary

Game: Crimson Desert (PS5)

Session Length: 1-2 hours

Mood: Curious, excited and patient

Focus: Exploration and discovery

Next Objective: Continue exploring and begin to understand the world on my own terms.

https://manamode.co.uk/quest-log-beginning-a-new-path-in-crimson-desert/

10 Relaxing JRPGs to Play When You Want to Slow Down

Gaming doesn’t always need to be intense.

Mana Mode

Gaming doesn’t always need to be intense.

Sometimes the best games are the ones that let you slow down, settle into a world, and enjoy the journey without pressure. Many JRPGs are perfect for this kind of experience. Their slower pacing, turn-based combat, and focus on storytelling create a rhythm that can feel calming rather than stressful. Another thing that can make these games feel relaxing is that some have started to incorporate an auto battle system, which is always a welcomed option.

For players looking to unwind after a long day, here are ten JRPGs that are perfect for relaxing adventures. These are games that I have enjoyed. I have only included games in the list that I have experienced. If there are any other games that you feel should be on this list please let me know!

Although this list is numbered, these are listed in no particular order. I am not stating which one is the best, but simply listing 10 relaxing JRPGs.

1. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Few games capture the feeling of a peaceful adventure quite like Dragon Quest XI. The colourful world, charming characters, and classic turn-based combat create a comforting rhythm.

Exploring towns, listening to the gentle soundtrack, and progressing through the story at your own pace makes this one of the most relaxing JRPGs ever made.

2. Final Fantasy IX

With its whimsical medieval setting and memorable cast of characters, Final Fantasy IX feels like stepping into a storybook.

The slower pacing and beautiful soundtrack make it an ideal game to unwind with, especially during the quieter moments spent exploring towns and talking to NPCs.

3. Chrono Trigger

Despite its legendary status, Chrono Trigger remains one of the most accessible and relaxing JRPGs.

Its streamlined design means the story flows smoothly without excessive grinding, allowing players to enjoy the adventure without frustration.

4. Visions of Mana

The colours, the combat, everything about this game feels fun!

The vibrant atmosphere and characters keep you engaged, while also wanting to explore more.

5. Persona 5 Royal

While its dungeon sections can be intense, much of Persona 5 Royal is spent enjoying everyday life in Tokyo.

Visiting cafés, building friendships, and planning your daily schedule creates a unique rhythm that balances excitement with calm moments.

6. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Another classic entry in the Dragon Quest series, this game perfectly captures the joy of wandering through a colourful fantasy world. This was the first Dragon Quest game I played completely. The sounds, the enemies and the visuals are just so nostalgic when playing anything from this series now and it always brings me back to this game.

Its open environments and charming atmosphere make it easy to lose track of time while exploring.

7. Tales of Arise

This was a JRPG that took me by surprise. It is a must play for any JRPG. I had never played anything from this series and this was the perfect game to jump into as a newcommer.

The character development, connections, gameplay and again vibrant world kept me coming back for more.

8. Octopath Traveler Series

The beautiful HD-2D art style and atmospheric soundtrack give Octopath Traveler a calming, almost meditative quality.

Traveling between towns and following the stories of the eight characters creates a relaxed sense of adventure.

All Octopath traveller games, including 2 and 0 are all relaxing to play.

9. Final Fantasy VII

One of my favourite final fantasy games, the remakes so far have also been excellent. These are games that leave you wanting to explore everything and also completing mini games is fun and rewarding.

The story also speaks for itself.

10. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

This beloved JRPG is known for its detailed world and thoughtful storytelling.

Much of the game focuses on exploring towns, learning about characters, and slowly uncovering the larger story making it a wonderfully relaxing experience.

Why JRPGs Are Perfect for Relaxation

JRPGs often encourage a different pace compared to other genres.

Instead of constant action, they offer:

turn-based combat that rewards patience

long stories that unfold gradually

towns and environments designed for exploration

This slower rhythm allows players to fully immerse themselves in the world without feeling rushed.

Final Thoughts

Relaxing games remind us that gaming doesn’t always need to be fast or competitive.

Sometimes the most memorable experiences come from wandering through a peaceful town, listening to a beautiful soundtrack, and enjoying the journey one step at a time.

JRPGs have been providing those experiences for decades — and they remain one of the best genres for players looking to unwind.

The Beginner’s Guide to Mindful Gaming

Modern gaming moves quickly.

Mana Mode

Modern gaming moves quickly.

Open-world maps are packed with objectives, multiplayer matches demand constant attention, and new releases arrive almost every week. For many players, gaming has started to feel less like a relaxing hobby and more like something to keep up with. Something I felt myself was with the constant bombardment of new games and reviews coming out, making me feel like I need to catch up and that I was always behind as I did not have time to play these games during their release week.

But gaming doesn’t have to feel that way. There is another approach one that focuses on slowing down, being present, and enjoying games more intentionally. Don’t get me wrong, there will be the occasional game you are really into and you will want to play that at it’s release date, however when this feeling becomes overwhelming that is where we need to be more “mindful”.

This approach is called mindful gaming.

On ManaMode, mindful gaming is the idea that games can be enjoyed not just for excitement or competition, but for the way they allow us to focus, relax, and immerse ourselves in another world.

In this guide, we’ll explore what mindful gaming means and how you can start practicing it.

What Is Mindful Gaming?

Mindful gaming is simply the act of playing games with intention and awareness.

Instead of rushing through content or constantly switching between games, mindful play encourages you to:

• focus on one game at a time • appreciate the world and atmosphere • enjoy the journey rather than rushing to the ending

Many RPGs naturally encourage this style of play because they are built around slower progression, exploration, and storytelling.

For example, games like Dragon Quest XI or Final Fantasy IX invite players to spend time in their worlds rather than simply racing to the next objective.

Why Gaming Feels Overwhelming Today

One reason mindful gaming has become important is that modern digital life often fragments our attention.

Notifications, social media feeds, and constant information streams compete for our focus throughout the day.

When gaming follows the same pattern fast action, endless objectives, and constant stimulation it can become mentally exhausting rather than relaxing.

Slower games offer an alternative. Instead of overwhelming the player, they create space for curiosity and reflection.

This is one reason many players still return to classic RPGs like Chrono Trigger or Dragon Quest. Also there are so many other hidden gems in this category. Tales of Arise, Granblue Fantasy Re:link, Visions of Mana, are just a few to mention.

These games move at a gentler pace and reward patience.

Why RPGs Are Perfect for Mindful Play

Role-playing games are uniquely suited to mindful gaming because they encourage a slower rhythm.

Instead of relying purely on reaction speed, they invite players to:

• explore towns and environments • talk to characters • think about strategy in battles • follow a long narrative journey

Turn-based systems in particular encourage thoughtful play.

For example, tactical RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics allow players to pause and carefully plan each action rather than reacting instantly.

This creates a calm, deliberate gameplay experience.

The Benefits of Mindful Gaming

Practicing mindful gaming can change the way you experience games.

Many players notice benefits such as:

Greater Relaxation

When you stop rushing through games, the experience becomes more calming and immersive.

Stronger Focus

Playing a single game with full attention helps train your mind to concentrate for longer periods.

Deeper Appreciation

You start to notice small details music, dialogue, environments that might otherwise be missed.

More Memorable Adventures

Instead of quickly finishing games and moving on, you create stronger memories of the worlds you explore.

How to Practice Mindful Gaming

You don’t need to change everything about the way you play games. Small adjustments can make a big difference.

1. Play One Game at a Time

Avoid jumping between multiple games.

Choose one RPG and allow yourself to settle into its world.

2. Limit Distractions

Turn off notifications while playing.

This helps you stay immersed in the experience.

3. Take Your Time

There is no need to rush through quests or objectives.

Spend time exploring towns, talking to NPCs, and enjoying the world.

4. Reflect on Your Sessions

Short reflections like a Quest Log can deepen the experience. This is something I have started doing with the start up of this blog.

Writing about what you discovered or how a game made you feel helps reinforce the journey.

Building a Mindful Gaming Ritual

One of the simplest ways to enjoy gaming more is to treat it like a small ritual.

Instead of squeezing gaming between distractions, create a moment dedicated to it.

For example:

• play in the evening after work • set aside 30–60 minutes • focus on a single game session

This turns gaming into something closer to reading a book or watching a favourite film.

A quiet space to unwind.

Why Slow Gaming Matters

Gaming culture often celebrates speed.

Speedruns, rapid content consumption, and endless new releases can create pressure to keep moving.

But some of the best gaming experiences happen when we slow down.

Walking through a village, speaking to NPCs, finding hidden easter eggs and even petting animals!

Mindful gaming reminds us that games are not only about achievement. They are also about experience.

Final Thoughts

Mindful gaming isn’t about playing fewer games or abandoning modern titles.

It’s simply about approaching games with more intention.

By slowing down and giving your attention to a single adventure, you may discover something that many players overlook:

The journey itself can be the most rewarding part of gaming.

Mindful Play Series: When Screens Steal Our Focus and How Games Can genuinely been looking forward to. The music swells. The world loads in. The controller feels familiar in my hands.

And yet my mind feels… scattered.

I check my phone without thinking. I forget what I was doing five minutes ago. I open a menu and can’t remember what I meant to equip.

The game isn’t the problem. It’s the state I’ve arrived in.

Recently I came across the idea of something sometimes referred to as “digital dementia” a term used to describe the way constant screen exposure, multitasking, and device reliance can impact attention and memory over time. It isn’t a formal diagnosis, and it isn’t about blaming technology. But it does point toward something many of us recognise: mental fog, shortened attention spans, and difficulty staying present.

And when you think about it, modern life makes this almost inevitable.

We scroll while waiting. We multitask while watching. We jump between tabs, notifications, and feeds dozens sometimes hundreds of times a day.

By the time we sit down to play, our minds have already run a marathon. This has been a result of constant screen use throughout the day. However not all screen time is the same.

Passive scrolling asks very little of us, but leaves our brains constantly stimulated. Games especially slower RPGs, strategy titles, or story-driven adventures ask something different. They ask us to focus. To remember systems. To think ahead. To pay attention to small details. But that only works if we give them space.

I’ve started to realise that when a game feels “boring” or “hard to get into,” it’s often not because the game lacks depth. It’s because I haven’t shifted gears.

Mindful play, for me, has become about that shift.

Closing other apps. Putting my phone out of reach. Taking a quiet minute before loading in. Sometimes even writing down where I left off in a longer RPG.

Small rituals. Nothing dramatic.
